Bamboos are in reality woody grasses, which in many cases will add a tropical appearance to a garden.

We grow a number of species and cultivars, which are hardy in many gardens throughout the UK. Most are moisture lovers and resent dry soils. Some will even grow in permanently wet soils and can look outstanding as an elegant waterside feature.

Bamboos are at their best in a fertile, woodland type soil, and will even grow in up to 50% shade. They do resent soils, which has a high lime content, but will grow in fertile soils overlaying chalk.
When preparing the soil, dig out to a depth of 18 inches (45cm) and work in plenty of mature garden compost, well-rotted manure, leaf soil, or composted bark.
Pot grown plants can be planted out at any time of the year that is providing the ground is not frozen, or too dry. Plants purchased in pots should first be stood in a tub of water for one hour before the pot is removed.

Plant at the same depth as it was grown in the pot, then backfill with the prepared soil and firm by treading. Always water newly planted bamboos during dry summers.

Do not use weed killers around bamboos as their leaves and young stems will absorb weed killers resulting in their demise.

We often have the following bamboo species and cultivars in stock:-

Please bear in mind that the plants listed may not be available at all times of the year. Email enquiries@goscote.co.uk for details of specific plant availability.
