Climbers

In their native habitat many plant species have developed the ability to climb trees, shrubs, or even solid rock walls, enabling them to expose their leaves and branches to sunlight. This enables them to produce not only stronger new growth, but also the sunlight will ripen the branches enabling them to flower and fruit more freely.

Many, such as Wisteria, Lonicera and the summer flowering Jasminum produce stems which twine around the trunks and branches of trees and shrubs. The golden hop, Humulus lupulus (Golden Tassels) is also a vigorous twiner, but this is an Herbaceous plant and will die back to the ground each autumn.

Most of the Clematis species are climbers, but these do not have twining stems, but leaves which twine around anything within reach. Most Clematis only climb 3/4metres, but some, such as Clematis Montana are very vigorous, which if left to its own devises can but seen growing 15 metre, or more, into the branches of large trees.

A number of climbing plants such as the grape vine (Vitis) produce twining tendrils which wrap themselves around branches of small trees.

All of the modern cultivars of both twining and tendril climbers are ideal to use in the garden on trellis, pergola, arches and even chain link fencing.

Many plants do not have the ability to twine, but have devised other ways of climbing. Ivy, Parthenocissus and climbing Hydrangea produce either sucker pads, or small aerial roots. In nature these climb trees, or even rock walls, suckers sticking to firm surfaces and aerial roots finding their way into the spaces on the bark of trees, or even crevices in rocks. All of these are suitable in the garden to grow on walls, fences, or even old tree trunks.

There are also many scandent shrubs which have non of the above abilities to climb, but still manage to thrust their way through the branches of large shrubs, or small trees. Rambling rose and blackberries are typical examples; these use their thorns and spine to prevent their lax branches from slipping back down.

By far the most misunderstood of all shrubs grown on walls, or fences are those which are not climbers, but plants with long, lax branches which need to have their branches trained out, even at an early age, to form a framework on a trellis, or even wires spaced out at 45cm intervals. Typical examples of these are Ceanothus, Pyracantha and Sophora.

Our list will show you many outstanding climbing, or wall plants, many more may be available. If you cannot see what you want then please ask.

Please bear in mind that the plants listed may not be available at all times of the year. Email enquiries@goscote.co.uk for details of specific plant availability.
