People are often confused when they see plants listed as either Herbaceous, or perennials. Herbaceous is the name given to all plants without woody stems, these can be annuals, which grow, flower, set seed and die within one year. Biennials, which form a plant in one season, flower, set seed and die the following season. Perennials are Herbaceous plants, which have a life expectancy of more than three years. Many however have a very long lifespan; Peonies for instance can be found in old cottage gardens, which were planted over 50 years ago.

Most perennials love a deep, fertile, moist, but well drained soil. There are exceptions, Iris laevigata, Filipendula ‘Variegata and Astilbes prefer soils which are constantly moist and grow well in bog gardens.

Always prepare the soil before purchasing your plants. Perennial weeds such as couch grass, ground elder, bindweed and nettles should be dug out, or the foliage sprayed with Glyphosate, which in two weeks will kill most of the root system. Do not get Glyphosate on the foliage of plants you wish to retain, as it will kill anything that has green leaves.

Perennials can be purchased which flower at different seasons; consequently, it is possible to have plants in flower for at least 10 months of the year. To assist you in your choice we have listed just a few of the many cultivars we have in stock and the seasons they flower.

Please bear in mind that the plants listed may not be available at all times of the year. Email enquiries@goscote.co.uk for details of specific plant availability.
