Although there are quite a number of Acer species which are native to Japan, only two of these, Acer palmatum and Acer japonicum are called Japanese Maples. The remaining species are always referred to as maples from Japan. The Japanese Maples are amongst the most attractive of all small deciduous trees and shrubs which are hardy enough to be grown outdoors in the British Isles.

During the peaceful Edo era (1603-1867) the Japanese, always outstanding gardeners, were very enthusiastic Japanese maple cultivators. Especially so with Acer palmatum, numerous new seedling forms and sports were introduced and these were often given very poetic names, which non-Japanese people found not only difficult to pronounce, but also to interoperate. For instance, the Japanese name given to one Acer palmatum is ‘Shigitatsu Sawa’, this means ‘near a swamp where solitary snipes fly out’.

The Japanese Maples did not appear in British gardens until 1820, these must have arrived from Europe as the German botanist/plant collector Thunberg was writing about Acer palmatum in 1784.

The two world wars contributed much to the demise of maples in the gardens of Japan. Young plants were grubbed out to make way for food production and most of the older trees were cut down to use as firewood. After the Second World War the Japanese and many other countries throughout the world began to introduce new Japanese maple cultivars. Now there are over 400 cultivars of Acer palmatum, many are still not available in this country.

Many of the cultivars are so similar in appearance that you would have to be a dedicated collector with a very large garden to grow all of them. We have taken the opportunity to select some of the finest which are currently available and expect to add to this list as other distinct and outstanding cultivars become available.

You can add the fact sheet, but in feeding at the bottom of the sheet you will have to change Miracid to what I think is Scott’s acid fertilizer. Look it up

Please bear in mind that the plants listed may not be available at all times of the year. Email enquiries@goscote.co.uk for details of specific plant availability.
