A red rose is thought by many to be a symbol of our British heritage, however, if we were to go back only 150 years, we would find it very difficult to find any of the double red roses that we now think of as commonplace. All of the rose species that are native to the UK have single or semi-double white, pink, or rosy-red flowers. These are often seen in hedgerows, or even planted to enhance the sides of new roadways.

The introduction of rose species from other parts of the temperate parts of the world quickly led to nurserymen producing hybrids, with larger and more fragrant flowers. Over the last 100 years, many thousands of rose hybrids have been introduced. Many lacked vigour, had a short flowering period, or were subject to pests and diseases and consequently, most were discarded. Even so, there are now still many hundreds of rose hybrids to choose from and Goscote Nurseries prides itself in being able to offer a number of roses that we feel are outstanding.

There is a great deal of variation in the habit of roses. Prostrate forms are ideal to use as ground cover, whereas miniature roses look good when planted in pots or rockeries. Small bush floribunda and patio roses grow well in containers. The larger hybrid tea roses and floribundas, in contrast, are ideal for planting in rose beds (preferably one variety to a bed, as their habits vary).

Shrub roses, especially some of the modern hybrids, are useful to add colour to a shrubbery during the summer months. Climbing roses are ideal to train on walls, fences and pillars. Rambling roses have a more lax habit and look at their best over large pergolas, or even trained into trees.

PLANTING

Roses will grow and look their best in a fertile, clay type soil, however, if sandy loams are bulked up with organic compost and manure, roses will still produce a good crop of flowers. If you purchase pot grown roses, before planting stand the pots in a bucket of water for about an hour to ensure the compost in the pot is wet through to the centre. The soil should be dug to a depth of 45cm with plenty of organic matter mixed into it. Two handfuls of bone meal incorporated at two handfuls to a square metre will help to improve new root activity.

Plant roses 25-50mm deeper than they were grown on the nursery and after back filling with soil, firm them in by carefully treading around them. After planting, it is advisable to cut rose bushes back by halfway to prevent the wind from rocking them.

PRUNING AND DEAD HEADING.

Deadheading fading flowers from roses is a useful method of extending the flowering period of miniature, patio, shrub and perpetual flowering climbing roses, and also prevents the plant from setting seed. Ramblers flower for eight weeks during the summer, but rarely flower again after August.

During November many of the taller growing Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses should be reduced to almost one third of their height; this will prevent wind and snow breaking their branches. During March, miniature, patio/floribunda and hybrid tea roses can have all of their previous year's growth reduced to the outmost facing of two buds. It is also advisable to remove any dead or very weak branches when carrying out the winter prune. If there is room, shrub roses can be left to their own devices, but if necessary, it is also possible to cut back the annual growth halfway to help restrict their growth. Climbing roses first need a framework of branches tying out espalier fashion on wires or a trellis, after which all of the side shoots should be cut back to within two buds of the established framework. Ramblers, when grown in trees, can be left to their own devices, however, when grown on pergolas they will need some of the older branches removed to keep them in check.

PESTS AND DISEASES.

Roses, like most other plants in the garden, are prone to attack by pests. Spraying with pyrethrins or insecticidal soap will only kill insects on which it is sprayed. Bifenthrin will coat the leaves and kill all insects and caterpillars, however, rain will wash this off, and may need to be re-applied. Provado is the only systemic insecticide available to gardeners; this will last in the plants system for six weeks and during that time kill most pests.
